The Ministry of Revenue was currently very bustling. Imperial Tutor Wen was ordering people to deliver the confiscated a.s.sets to the warehouse of the national treasury. Hua Zhu Yu slowly entered. She was instructed to come and oversee the affair. Upon seeing her arrival, Imperial Tutor Wen expressed his displeasure with a cold grunt. Ignoring her, he continued on with his work. In his eyes, it didn’t matter how talented Hua Zhu Yu was. He only saw her as a eunuch who tempted the Emperor so he did not put her in his eyes at all.

Hua Zhu Yu was unfazed by his disposition. As she saw the two men carrying in a large trunk, she ordered the guards that came with her to tear the seal and open the trunk, revealing the valuable a.s.sets inside.

She stepped forward to examine the a.s.sets and her eyes narrowed. The a.s.sets inside the trunk were all substandard, they certainly were not considered precious treasures.

"Imperial Tutor Wen, these are the things you have confiscated from the homes of the culprits?" Hua Zhu Yu asked.

Imperial Tutor Wen coldly humphed. "That’s right!" As he spoke, he also walked over to the trunk. When he saw what was inside, he was stunned, muttering in surprise, "What’s going on?"

"Open all the trunks!" Hua Zhu Yu coldly ordered as she glanced at Imperial Tutor Wen.

Immediately, all the trunks were opened. The valuables inside had been replaced with inferior items. The sum of all these items were worth no more than 100,000, not hundreds of thousands.

"What’s going on? This servant should be the one to ask." Hua Zhu Yu turned around to face Imperial Tutor Wen.

She originally thought that Imperial Tutor Wen was an honest official and would not take this opportunity to line his pockets. Who would’ve expect that he would exchange the precious items with these cheap goods.

"You think this official will do such a thing? What evidence do you have?" Imperial Tutor Wen angrily asked.

Hua Zhu Yu looked at his unsightly expression and slowly replied, "If you say that you didn’t do it then I also hope that is so. Since you say you didn’t do it, guards, quickly go to the Wen Residence to inspect and return Imperial Tutor Wen’s honor!"

Hua Zhu Yu immediately sent the Minister of Justice Zhang Mu daren with a group of men to the Wen Residence to inspect. Less than 2 hours later, Zhang Mu returned to report, "This lowly official followed orders to inspect Imperial Tutor’s Residence and discovered 13 large trunks of gold, an estimate of 200,000 liang(weight 1 liang=50 gm) of gold per trunk, 30 trunks of silver, about 8000 liang of silver per trunk, gems and jewels, approximately more than 400,000 liang……"

"Shut your mouth!" Imperial Tutor Wen angrily ordered. His finger furiously quivered as he pointed at Zhang Mu, stating, "Nonsense, you’re slandering ……"

Following orders, An Xiao Er stepped forward with the guards of the Yulin army to escort Imperial Tutor Wen out.

"Evildoer! You evildoer enticed the Emperor to frame this old man, you will have your retribution……" Imperial Tutor Wen continued to shout as he was escorted out.

Hua Zhu Yu stared at Imperial Tutor Wen’s ashen expression as he angrily shouted. She felt something was amiss. Was he truly framed?

"Zhang Mu, you really found all those things in the residence of the Imperial Tutor?" Hua Zhu Yu faintly questioned.

"Every word this lowly official spoke was the truth!" Zhang Mu said as he bowed.

Hua Zhu Yu laughed and replied, "You don’t have to keep it from me. How can I not know the Emperor’s intentions."

Zhang Mu did not reply, continuing to have his head bowed.

"What are you bowing for!" Hua Zhu Yu frowned and shouted.

Zhang Mu was frightened, his legs were soft and his forehead was oozing with sweat. With his figure still bowed, he said, "Chief Manager Bao…… this……you should directly ask His Majesty!"

Hua Zhu Yu looked at Zhang Mu and then quickly turned to leave. At the gate of the Ministry of Revenue, she mounted the horse to travel back to the palace.

Hua Zhu Yu sped on her horse, leaving the guards following behind. When she reached Anning Lane, a horse suddenly jumped out from a side direction, blocking her way.

Hua Zhu Yu was taken aback and quickly pulled on the reins. The horse neighed and rose its 2 front legs up for a moment before finally regaining balance.

She looked up to find Left Chancellor Ji Feng Li sitting on his horse, casting a chilling gaze her way.

The intensity of his gaze unsettled her, making it hard for her to slightly breath. She pulled the reins, intending to ignore him and proceed forward but he moved over, blocking her way once again.

Hua Zhu Yu coldly humphed. Holding the reins, she calmly flashed a bright smile. "Left Chancellor daren, for what have you stopped this gonggong for?"

Ji Feng Li was basked beneath the warm sunlight. He looked straight at Hua Zhu Yu and the corner of his lips slightly lifted.

"Chief Manager Bao is so anxious to return to the palace. Is it to obtain merit?" he asked leisurely, his tone laced with ridicule.

It was obvious Ji Feng Li was aware of what happened to Imperial Tutor Wen and thought that she framed him. She couldn’t say that she wasn’t involved in this matter since it was her idea in the first place to give the task of investigating the deficit of the national treasury to Imperial Tutor Wen.However, others could question her but Ji Feng Li, this kind of deceitful man, based on what grounds can he question her. Hua Zhu Yu’s hands clenched indignantly.

Trying to remain calm, she smiled and replied, "It’s my fault for disturbing the father of Miss Wen, causing Left Chancellor daren to feel heartbroken. But with conclusive evidence, there is nothing this servant can do. Left Chancellor daren should move, else don’t blame this servant for being impolite."

"Oh?" Ji Feng Li narrowed his eyes. "I wonder how would Bao gonggong be impolite with this Chancellor?"

The corners of Hua Zhu Yu’s lips lifted in a sneer as she stroked the horse whip in her hand, calmly replying, "Left Chancellor daren, do really think that if you block the way this servant cannot pa.s.s?" Once the words left her lips, she raised the whip and flung it in Ji Feng Li’s direction.

Ji Feng Li remained calmly mounted on his horse as the sharp whistle of the whip attacked. He raised his sleeves and his hands reached out, but before the whip was caught in his hands, Hua Zhu Yu changed the direction of the attack. Ji Feng Li withdrew his hand and employed his internal force but the whip glided like a snake, wrapping around his sleeve, the contrast of black on white visibly conspicuous.

After a few more moves, Ji Feng Li smiled and abruptly withdrew his internal force causing his sleeves to hang loose and his fingers shot out to grip the whip. Exerting his internal force, the whip was shattered into broken pieces with a pam.

The force bounced back towards Hua Zhu Yu. She quickly let go of the whip but the overwhelming force was too great. It even frightened her horse into a frenzy. Her horse neighed and stood on its two hind legs. Its two front legs soared and stomped the ground, creating countless dust clouds.

During the time the dust and dirt was still suspended in the air, Ji Feng Li rode pa.s.s her, his voice ringing in her ear, gently as a spring breeze, "You’re right. If we meet again, either you die or I die!"

A dangerous ambience lingered in the air.

After the clouds of dust dissipated, Hua Zhu Yu turned around but Ji Feng Li’s figure had soon disappeared.

Hua Zhu Yu lifted her hand to wipe the blood off her lips, her sleeves flutter in the wind as her dark eyes congealed.

"Chief Manager Bao! What’s wrong? Are you alright?" the guards had caught up and asked out of concern.

Hua Zhu Yu smiled and replied, "It’s nothing. Let’s return to the palace!"

These few nights, Huangfu Wu Shuang was busy with court affairs. He personally wanted to handle every single matter. He was no longer that immature Crown Prince of Eastern Palace. This also made Hua Zhu Yu certain that it was Huangfu Wu Shuang who had schemed against Imperial Tutor Wen.

In Qin Zheng Hall, Huangfu Wu Shuang was sitting on the dragon throne, glancing through the memorials. He was dressed in a body of golden imperial dragon robes, his hair bound up with the golden crown, his face picturesque with a hint of majesty. Upon seeing Hua Zhu Yu enter, he raised his head and asked, "Xiao Bao Er, how was the affair handled?"

"As your Majesty desired, Imperial Tutor Wen is imprisoned," she replied in a clear voice that was slightly cold and indifferent.

Huangfu Wu Shuang look at Hua Zhu Yu for a moment before placing the memorial down on the table and walking over to her. "Who provoked Xiao Bao Er and made you so angry?"

Hua Zhu Yu lowered her head for a moment before asking, "Your Majesty, Imperial Tutor Wen’s matters, was that schemed by you?"

Huangfu Wu Shuang furrowed his brows. If someone else had asked he would already be furious but he didn’t know why he didn’t have the heart to get angry at Yuan Bao.

"Xiao Bao Er, since my ascension, Zhen have been confronted with many criticisms in court. These few days, they continue to pressure me, especially Imperial Tutor Wen and Ji Feng Li’s faction. You also once said that if we don’t get rid of the Left Chancellor, Zhen cannot sit safe and soundly on this throne. If Imperial Tutor Wen is not removed from the equation, it’s hard for Zhen to have an opportunity to make a move against Ji Feng Li. Sometimes, there are certain instances where scheming is inevitable. Zhen have already thought through it carefully. Today Zhen imprisoned Imperial Tutor Wen but in the future he can still be set free and be of use."

Hua Zhu Yu merely smiled at his response, she couldn’t recognize the Huangfu Wu Shuang in front of her. He was just recently enthroned yet he already had a firm understanding of the schemes in court.

"Your Majesty plans to make a move against the Left Chancellor?" Hua Zhu Yu asked. Although it is said that Ji Feng Li used the opportunity of the expedition to the North to take control of the military power, it is undeniable that he had made great contributions. In the hearts of the populace, he stood high on a pedestal. Moreover, the key point was that it’s difficult to catch Ji Feng Li’s weakness so it’s hard to make a move against him.

Huangfu Wu Shuang smiled and said, "That is my intention but Zhen have yet to think of a solid plan. But it will happen soon. Xiao Bao Er, didn’t you say you had borrowed troops from w.a.n.g Yi? As long as we can stop w.a.n.g Yu’s army, there shouldn’t be a problem." Finished speaking, he took his seat once again to go through the rest of the memorials.

Seeping through the windows, the sunlight casted a warm light on his body. Beneath the rays of sunlight, his golden robes glimmered with a dazzling shine.

  ***

It was the 22nd of December, nearing the end of the year.

During morning court, Right Chancellor Nie Yuan Qiao stepped forward to submit his memorial. Hua Zhu Yu quickly retrieved the memorial and handed it to Huangfu Wu Shuang.

After glancing through the memorial, his expression turned somber. He slammed the memorial down on the table, coldly chiding, "Right Chancellor, these words are slanderous! For the sake of Southern Kingdom, Left Chancellor had personally went to secure the northern border. Left Chancellor is loyal wholeheartedly. He is the pillar of our nation yet you say he has intentions to rebel. Truly audacious. Court is adjourned!"

The court immediately erupted in uproar.

Stunned, Hua Zhu Yu shot a glance at Nie Yuan Qiao. He usually had on a testy appearance but today his lips were lifted in a smile. He raised his voice to announce, "This official is not slandering, there is evidence!"

"Speak!" Huangfu Wu Shuang was about to stand up and end the morning court but hearing Nie Yuan Qiao speak, he slowly took his seat again.

Hua Zhu Yu stood quietly beside Huangfu Wu Shuang. She was sure this was a scheme thought of by him and Nie Yuan Qiao. They were merely putting on an act. Huangfu Wu Shuang made a move against Ji Feng Li so quickly. Had he come up with a perfect strategy already?

She glanced at Ji Feng Li, only to see him in his court attires standing amongst the ma.s.s, casually watching Nie Yuan Qiao and Huangfu Wu Shuang.

"This time Left Chancellor personally led the expedition north but in fact he had already colluded with Xiao Yin so the Northern Army merely feigned defeat. Left Chancellor Ji Feng Li gathered the military power in his hands with intentions of overthrowing Southern Kingdom. When he succeeds he would divide the land of Southern Kingdom with the Northern Emperor. If Your Majesty does not believe, this official has evidence. The unmarried wife of the Left Chancellor is in fact the long lost sister of the Northern Emperor, princess Zhou Ya.Your Majesty, if Left Chancellor did not collude with the Northern Emperor, how could the Northern Emperor marry his sister to the Left Chancellor?"

As soon as Nie Yuan Qiao spoke, the court erupted once again in commotion.

Huangfu Wu Shuang also sucked in a deep breath.

  Hua Zhu Yu was stunned.

How did Nie Yuan Qiao know Jin Se was the long lost sister of Xiao Yin?

That day, when she brought Jin Se’s pendant to Northern Kingdom, Xiao Yin had recognized it and thought she was his sister. At that time, she realized Jin Se was the long lost sister of Xiao Yin. That being said, she should be the first person to be aware of this! Xiao Yin was the second but now he had lost his memories. Now there should only be 2 people who knew, her and Jin Se.

So how could Nie Yuan Qiao know?

  Did Jin Se tell him?

That couldn’t be possible. If Jin Se told him, she would be putting her life in danger. Besides, Jin Se loved Ji Feng Li, there was no way she would place him in harms way.

Ji Feng Li sneered, "Right Chancellor sure is interested in the affairs of this Chancellor’s household. Based on what evidence are you claiming that this Chancellor’s wife is Northern Kingdom’s princess?"

Nie Yuan Qiao looked at Ji Feng Li and replied , "At first this Chancellor did not dare believe it either. How could the Left Chancellor harbor rebellious thoughts? But once I saw this, this Chancellor had no choice but to believe." Finish speaking, Nie Yuan Qiao withdrew an item from his sleeve and raised it above his head.

Hua Zhu Yu stepped down to retrieve the item.

Hua Zhu Yu was usually a calm person but once she saw the item her mind went blank.

  It was Jin Se’s pendant.

With hands slightly shaking, Hua Zhu Yu retrieved the pendant.

That day at Yangguan, when she was caught by Xiao Yin, she had returned this pendant to him. Xiao Yin was at Northern Kingdom, how could this pendant fall into the hands of Nie Yuan Qiao?

Hua Zhu Yu suppressed the shock and handed the pendant over to Huangfu Wu Shuang.

Huangfu Wu Shuang narrowed his eyes and a.s.sessed the pendant. "Isn’t this just a common female pendant? What’s special about it?"

"Your Majesty, this is not an ordinary pendant. Your Majesty, please look at the engraved emblem on the pendant. This emblem is handed down through the Northern Kingdom’s royal family. Only a person of royal blood within the Northern Kingdom can wear it. This pendant belongs to the unmarried wife of the Left Chancellor."

"Truly ridiculous, Nie Yuan Qiao, you take out a pendant and then claim it belongs to the wife of the Left Chancellor. What’s your evidence?" an official stepped about to question.

"On this matter, Bao gonggong can testify." Nie Yuan Qiao suddenly turned to look at Hua Zhu Yu. "Does this pendant belong to the Left Chancellor’s unmarried wife? I hear Bao gonggong is acquainted with her!"

Looking at the pendant, Hua Zhu Yu’s mind was in turmoil. She could not determine what she was feeling in that moment.

She could feel her blood boiling with excitement. It was finally the moment she could overthrow Ji Feng Li and get revenge for the Hua family.

But on the other hand, she felt something was amiss. She felt like she was lost in a miasma, things were becoming increasingly unclear and muddled.

  Publishedat 8th of August 2019 06:03:50 AMChapter 119

The commotion in court quickly died down and everyone simultaneously fixed their gaze on Hua Zhu Yu . In that moment, many past events flashed through her mind .

Within the hall it was bright and warm but Hua Zhu Yu felt frigid cold . The coldness seem to charge through her, perforating into her heart, causing her to helplessly shudder . Beneath her sleeves, her hands clenched into fists in an effort to suppress her emotions and remain collected .

Raising her head, she smiled with composure and responded, “That’s right, this gonggong is acquainted with the wife of Left Chancellor . As for this pendant, I indeed have seen her wear it . ”

“You…… . ” A few officials furiously clamored and countless eyes focused on Hua Zhu Yu, some held anger, some held hatred and even ridicule…… . .

Hua Zhu Yu’s eyes unwaveringly surveyed the officials but when her gaze landed on Ji Feng Li, the smile on her lips froze .

  He was smiling!

His lips were lifted in a faint smile yet it was nevertheless gentle and peerlessly n.o.ble . But his gaze was chilling, enough to cause one’s heart to palpitate . Though they stood separated by quite a distance, Hua Zhu Yu could feel the iciness of his gaze seeping into her .

“Yuan Bao, this is a serious matter . You cannot spout nonsense! How can you be acquainted with Left Chancellor’s wife?” Huangfu Wu Shuang asked as his brows knitted .

Hua Zhu Yu lowered her head and said, “Replying to Your Majesty, this servant is not spouting nonsense . On the battlefield, this servant had gone against military orders to rescue Left Chancellor’s wife . Due to this, Left Chancellor daren had also punished this servant . This matter is known to all the generals in the army camp, Your Majesty can ask them to verify . ”

Upon hearing this Huangfu Wu Shuang narrowed his eyes and asked the generals “Is this true?”

In court, there were a few generals present who had partic.i.p.ated in the war with the north . One stepped forward to answer, “It’s true that Bao gonggong is acquainted with the wife of the Left Chancellor . However, this does not prove that this pendant belongs to her . May I ask, Commander Bao is a man, Left Chancellor’s wife is a woman, how can you have seen this personal item on her?” he angrily asked .

“Enough!” Huangfu Wu Shuang coldly uttered as he slammed the table . “This matter will be clearly investigated . Guards! Go to the Left Chancellor’s Residence and relay my decree to escort the Left Chancellor’s wife into the palace!”

“Your majesty, this servant wishes to go relay the decree!” Hua Zhu Yu stated as she knelt down, her brows slightly knitted .

“Yuan Bao, you are needed here to wait on me . Jixiang, go to the Left Chancellor’s Residence to relay my decree!”

Jixiang a.s.sented and led several Yulin army guards to the Left Chancellor’s Residence .

  Wait!

The entire hall was enveloped in complete silence, not a single voice could be heard .

Among the officials present, a few were angry, some were secretly happy, while a few were frightened . …… Only Ji Feng Li remained standing there calmly . Ever since Hua Zhu Yu said she was acquainted with Jin Se, he remained silent, his face was calm as a lake surface, no matter how big the pressing wind was, not a single ripple was seen .

Standing in the hall, Hua Zhu Yu could feel the uneasy calm before the storm, making it hard for her to somewhat breathe .

An unknown amount of time had pa.s.sed before Jixiang finally returned, hastily entering the hall with his horsetail whisk . All eyes were instantly fixed on him .

  Advertis.e.m.e.nt

“Your Majesty, Left Chancellor’s wife is not at the residence . This servant questioned the people in the residence and they said that she had went to burn incense at the temple since the early hours . This servant sent men to search all the temples within the capital but cannot find her, ” Jixiang carefully reported as he knelt down .

Jixiang’s clear loud voice resonated in the hall, shocking Hua Zhu Yu .

  translations at peachblossomgrove . com

  Jin Se’s missing?

If that’s the case then it would be hard to confirm Ji Feng Li’s crime .

“Oh? Not in the residence? Continue searching!” Huangfu Wu Shuang ordered .

“Your Majesty, she clearly knows she lost her pendant . Fearing that things would be revealed, she must have escaped!” Nie Yuan Qiao said .

“Ji aiqing(beloved official), is there anything you’d like to say?” Huangfu Wu Shuang slowly asked .

Ji Feng Li stepped forward, his figure straight and upright as thought among heaven and earth he stood alone . His gaze was exceedingly cold as he looked at Nie Yuan Qiao but once it moved to Huangfu Wu Shuang, the look in his eyes turned into sorrow and alarm, he bowed and said, “This official never colluded with Northern Kingdom nor harbored any intentions of rebelling . As for this official’s unmarried wife, though this official is unclear about her background, but this official believes she is definitely not the princess of Northern Kingdom . Your Majesty, please investigate this matter clearly and return this official’s innocence!”

Huangfu Wu Shuang let out a long sigh . “Alright, Left Chancellor, no need to worry . Zhen will certainly investigate this matter thoroughly . But this time I’m afraid Left Chancellor will have to suffer . Where are the guards of the Yulin Army?”

The guards were standing outside the hall for some time . Upon hearing the Emperor call for them, they quickly rushed in, the person leading the way was Nie Yuan Qiao’s son, Nie Ning . He cupped his fist and knelt down, stating, “Commander of the Yulin Army Nie Ning is here to follow command!”

“Temporarily take Left Chancellor Ji Feng Li into custody . After this matter has been thoroughly investigated, judgement will then be pa.s.sed!” Huangfu Wu Shuang coldly ordered .

“Yes Your Majesty!” Nie Ning stood and led the guards over to Ji Feng Li .

“Wait!” Upon hearing the order, a few officials surrounded Ji Feng Li in a protective circle . A few generals also stepped forward to stop the guards .

Momentarily, the hall shimmered with a light as swords were unsheathed and a dangerous ambience enveloped the air . Both sides glared at one another, the atmosphere was tense as an arrow pulled on a bowstring . “Audacious! Do you all want to rebel!” Nie Ning questioned in a loud voice .

Once the words were spoken, the hall descended into silence .

Standing beside Huangfu Wu Shuang, Hua Zhu Yu silently observed the turn of events .

The hall was exceedingly quiet, save for the limpid sound of dripping water from the Seven PaG.o.da on the dragon table .

“You all retreat . I believe His Majesty will investigate thoroughly and return my innocence!” Ji Feng Li voice sounded in the quiet hall, neither urgent nor slow but clear like spring breeze with a trace of majesty .

Upon hearing this, the officials, though unwilling at heart, stepped back .

Ji Feng Li turned to face Huangfu Wu Shuang . He knelt down and paid his respects before standing up and leaving the hall . From beginning to end, he did not look at Hua Zhu Yu even once .

Nie Ning quickly led the Yulin army to follow after .

Standing beside Huangfu Wu Shuang, Hua Zhu Yu was at the highest position within the hall . From an unknown location, a gust of wind seemed to have blown through, carrying an icy chill that engulfed her as it flickered her clothes .

Hua Zhu Yu watched as Ji Feng Li’s figure continue to become increasingly distant until he gradually disappeared in front of her eyes .

Strangely, when she saw Ji Feng Li being taken away, she did not experience joy nor euphoria in her heart . On the contrary, a deep sense of emptiness like a sharp knife was lodged in her chest . The emptiness seem to be drowning her but she was unable to resist, nor did she want to resist .

“Court is adjourned!” Huangfu Wu Shuang ordered, startling Hua Zhu Yu . When she got back to her senses, she saw that the officials were already leaving .

Now all that remained in the hall was Huangfu Wu Shuang and Hua Zhu Yu, one sat while the other stood . Surrounded by silence, Hua Zhu Yu quietly gazed at the Seven PaG.o.da on the dragon table . It was imposing with faint steam rising in spirals .

“Xiao Bao Er, finally zhen can take down Ji Feng Li, are you excited?” Huangfu Wu Shuang asked with a bright smile as he patted Hua Zhu Yu’s shoulder .

Hua Zhu Yu faintly smiled . “This servant did not know Your Majesty’s methods were this brilliant . Ji Feng Li’s reputation is impeccable so it’s hard to make a move against him . But unexpectedly, his wife is Northern Kingdom’s princess . He is personally courting disaster ah! But the fact that his wife is Northern Kingdom’s princess should be a hidden secret . How did Your Majesty find out?”

Huangfu Wu Shuang smiled and asked, “Xiao Bao Er, you really want to know?”

Hua Zhu Yu replied, “Naturally, this servant would like to know . Your Majesty is also aware that there is bad blood between this servant and Ji Feng Li . This servant also wanted to overthrow him since long ago . So this servant would like to express grat.i.tude to the person who helped make this possible . But if Your Majesty does not wish to say, this servant will no longer ask . ”

Huangfu Wu Shuang threw his head back laughing and said, “You obviously want to know! Alright, there is no need to hide it from you . I will take you to see this person!”

The night moonlight was like water, clear and cold .

Hua Zhu Yu followed Huangfu Wu Shuang and they strolled pa.s.s Tai Yelake which was covered with a thin layer of ice, crossed the red bridge and entered the harem(place of residence of the imperial wives/concubines .

Huangfu Wu Shuang’s ascension had taken place not too long ago . The harem was not filled with women . Apart from Dan Hong who was free to move about because of Hua Zhu Yu, the others(referring to the prior Emperor’s women) who had no background were all shuttled to the Cold Palace by Huangfu Wu Shuang . Those that came from large official families on the other hand were all sent home . And since Huangfu Wu Shuang was recently enthroned, he had yet to select any imperial concubines so this harem was pretty much empty . As a result, it gave off quite a gloomy and dull impression, especially at nighttime .

However there was a palace within the harem that was brightly lit . It was magnificent, even more brilliant in splendor that Empress Dowager Nie’s Ci Ning Palace .

Hua Zhu Yu did not understand why Huangfu Wu Shuang led her to the harem, it can’t be the person he’s talking about was a woman?

Huangfu Wu Shuang headed straight to that brightly lit palace and Hua Zhu Yu followed along . When they arrived at the entrance, Hua Zhu Yu looked up at the name plate, the words were written in bold, grand calligraphy “Qi Feng Palace’ .

Seeing these 3 words, Hua Zhu Yu was a little startled at heart .

Qi Feng Palace was the residence for the Empress . That must mean that the person living here must be the one Huangfu Wu Shuang intends to crown as his Empress . But as far as Hua Zhu Yu knew, there was only one woman he cared for, the precious daughter of Imperial Tutor Wen, Wen Wan .

Hesitation halted Hua Zhu Yu’s steps and she was uncertain if she should enter .

A small eunuch standing at the entrance had quickly raised his voice to announce, “The Emperor arrives!”

Everyone standing at the entrance quickly knelt down as Huangfu Wu Shuang entered with his hands clasped behind his back .

Hua Zhu Yu followed behind Huangfu Wu Shuang . They walked into the courtyard and saw another group of servants who all hastily knelt down upon hearing the arrival of the Emperor . Hua Zhu Yu did not expect this place to have so many maidservants and eunuchs .

Under the eaves hung several lanterns illuminating the entire courtyard in a dazzling light .

Beneath the plum tree, a woman was dancing in the snow .

She had her body bent as she spun around, her each and every movement, heart-stirring . She was adorned in a pink dress that fluttered lightly in the night wind . Her beauty far outshone the plum blossoms over her .

This woman was indeed the precious daughter of Imperial Tutor Wen: Wen Wan .

Surprised, Hua Zhu Yu watched her as her mind fell into confusion .

Jin Se’s pendant must have been brought back by Wen Wan . Hua Zhu Yu had handed the pendant to Xiao Yin and Wen Wan had been by his side this whole time so it wasn’t difficult to imagine that she was aware Xiao Yin had a long lost younger sister . It probably wasn’t difficult for her to take the pendant either .

But how did Wen Wan know Jin Se was the Northern Kingdom’s princess? She recalled that when she last met Xiao Yin, she still thought Jin Se was dead . She also hadn’t told Xiao Yin about Jin Se either .

Surely Wen Wan had heard the eunuch announce the Emperor’s arrival but she was still immersed in the dance, not stopping for anyone .

A maidservant bowed and said, “Your Majesty, this servant will go report to Miss Wen!”

Huangfu Wu Shuang lifted his hand and said, “No need!”

Hua Zhu Yu stood beside Huangfu Wu Shuang . The night wind rustled their clothes, carrying a slight chill .

Wen Wan’s delicate waist moved as she danced but suddenly, as though exhausted, she fell to the ground, her complexion slightly pale . Her pink dress sprawled on the snow like a flower blooming in the cold night .

Quickly rushing over to her side, Huangfu Wu Shuang asked with concern, “Wan Er, what’s wrong?”

Nestled in Huangfu Wu Shuang’s arms, Wen Wan slowly lifted her head and an expression of slight surprise appeared on her dignified face . She pushed away from Huangfu Wu Shuang and knelt down to pay respects . But before she could do so, Huangfu Wu Shuang said, “Wan Er, no need to be courteous!”

Wen Wan’s lips curled in a light smile and said, “Please forgive me Your Majesty . Wan Er had been immersed in the dance and did not know Your Majesty had arrived . ” Her voice was soft and graceful .

Huangfu Wu Shuang laughed merrily and said “Wan Er, why are you dancing in the cold snow, what if you get sick? But with the backdrop of white snow along with the red plum blossoms, your dance is truly breathtaking . Amongst endless snow, a dance radiates of wintry enchantment, beautiful like an illusion, startling one to retreat in elation . ”

Hua Zhu Yu frowned . This was the first time she heard Huangfu Wu Shuang reciting poetry . She was quite surprised that he had some knowledge in this field .

“Xiao Bao Er, what do you think of my poem?” Huangfu Wu Shuang turned around and asked Hua Zhu Yu .

Hua Zhu Yu silently snorted . These words should be directed to the person he admired, why ask her for?

“This poem compliments well with Miss Wen’s dance!” Hua Zhu Yu said with a bow .

Huangfu Wu Shuang reached to hold Wen Wan’s hand, happily saying, “Wan Er, let’s go inside and drink some tea to warm ourselves . ”

Wen Wan smiled softly and replied, “Alright . ”

As they turned to leave, Wen Wan shot a glance at Hua Zhu Yu from the corner of her eye, her gaze heavy with animosity .

When they were at Northern Kingdom, Hua Zhu Yu had captured Wen Wan and used her to threaten Xiao Yin into releasing Jin Se . Hua Zhu Yu had even stabbed her chest with a spear . Although she acted a little rash, she had already broken off the tip of the spear and had no intentions of taking Wen Wan’s life . But how could she know that, but even if she did, she probably still hate her the same . After all, Hua Zhu Yu did hurt her so Wen Wan surely will hate her, there was no doubt about it .

Hua Zhu Yu shook her head and bitterly smiled . It seems she has offended too many people . Just today in court, she had offended Ji Feng Li’s whole faction .

“Is this not Commander Bao? That day on the battlefield, Commander Bao was valiant and heroic, Wan Er still remembers clearly!” Wen Wan slowly said, stressing each word .

“Oh?” Huangfu Wu Shuang’s interest was piqued and he held Wen Wan’s hand as they entered the room, asking along the way,” How was Bao Er on the battlefield, tell me about it Wan Er . ”

Wen Wan smiled . “Alright, if Your Majesty wants to hear, Wan Er will tell you all about it!”

Hua Zhu Yu followed them into the room . It was so warm that it felt like worlds apart compared to the coldness outside . Hua Zhu Yu couldn’t help but shudder at the quick change in temperature .

Hua Zhu Yu stepped forward to a.s.sist Huangfu Wu Shuang take off his fur coat and handed it to a maidservant to hang on the rack .

Huangfu Wu Shuang walked over to the couch to sit near the furnace and Wen Wan followed after . The two sat near the fire and talked while a maidservant attended to them with tea and pastries .

Hua Zhu Yu stood silently on the side . She thought that the scene in front of her was quite unreal .

She was sure that Wen Wan liked Ji Feng Li in the past . At the banquet at Kang w.a.n.g’s Residence, she could recognize the affection just from listening to them play a song together . Moreover, for the sake of Ji Feng Li, Wen Wan had repeatedly rejected Huangfu Wu Shuang’s courtship .

If it wasn’t for Xiao Yin taking her to Northern Kingdom, Wen Wan would have soon married Ji Feng Li . But now, Wen Wan had returned and even brought back Jin Se’s pendant, causing Ji Feng Li to become locked up in prison in the Ministry of Justice .

Hua Zhu Yu harbored a deep hatred for Ji Feng Li thus she wanted to topple him . Wen Wan however was different, she deeply admired Ji Feng Li so why was she deliberately framing him?

Wen Wan surely knows that treason is a terrible crime and once found guilty he will certainly be put to death . Although Ji Feng Li was yet to be pinned with such crime, how could Huangfu Wu Shuang let him go now that he’s imprisoned? Even if Wen Wan no longer loved Ji Feng Li, could she mercilessly harm the person she once loved?

As Hua Zhu Yu thought about it, a rising chill slowly enveloped her heart, gradually diffusing through her whole body . Though the room was warm, she felt a coldness deep in her bones .

“Oh really?” Huangfu Wu Shuang suddenly exclaimed in a loud voice of surprise .

Hua Zhu Yu looked up and saw him ask in a solemn tone, “Wan Er, are your wounds better now?”

Wen Wan’s brows lightly knitted and she faintly replied, “It’s alright now . I’ve made Your Majesty worry . It’s just that on that day Commander Bao was truly ruthless, stabbing Wan Er in the chest with a spear without the slightest hesitation . At that time, Wan Er had even pa.s.sed out due to the excruciating pain . On the battlefield, Commander Bao was like a bloodthirsty wolf . He thought that Wan Er was on Northern Kingdom’s side . He even ordered his men to use a dirty cloth to stuff Wan Er’s mouth . It was so painful that Wan Er couldn’t even eat for a few days . ”

Hua Zhu Yu couldn’t help but wrinkle her brow as she listened to Wan Wen recount her crimes . Wen Wan was definitely settling scores!

Huangfu Wu Shuang frowned and directed his gaze at Hua Zhu Yu . He was a little surprised and asked skeptically, “Xiao Bao Er, is everything Wan Er said the truth?”

Hua Zhu Yu slowly stepped forward to stand in front of Huangfu Wu Shuang and said, “It’s true that this servant had hurt Miss Wen . ”

Huangfu Wu Shuang’s dark eyes sunk, his gaze heavy with a gloomy oppression .

Hua Zhu Yu’s heart slightly shook at his frosty gaze . She still remembered the events of the past . When she was still a musician at Zui Xian Fang(Intoxicated Immortal Square), Wen Wan had inadvertently heard her play the qin . Afterwards, Wen Wan went home and continued practicing her qin till her fingers bled . Because of this matter, Huangfu Wu Shuang captured Hua Zhu Yu and brought her back to Eastern Palace and cruelly made her become a eunuch . This time Hua Zhu Yu had stabbed Wen Wan’s chest with a spear . She really didn’t know if this little demon lord was going to ask for her life . After all, Wen Wan was the person he cherished in his heart .

Hua Zhu Yu wasn’t afraid of Huangfu Wu Shuang but at this moment she couldn’t afford to have a falling out with him .

She calmly met his gaze and replied, “However, Your Majesty may not be aware of the situation at that time . This servant was forced to take such actions due to the situation . This servant knows that Your Majesty cherishes Miss Wen so this servant never intended to place her life in danger . ”

After an extended time, Huangfu Wu Shuang let out a heavy sigh and said with his eyes narrowed, “Xiao Bao Er, if not for the fact that you’ve made great contributions, zhen will not easily spare you . You can withdraw now . Zhen and Wan Er don’t want to see you . ”

Hua Zhu Yu silently smiled . Huangfu Wu Shuang was no longer an immature juvenile who wanted to take people’s lives as before .

“Still not leaving!” Huangfu Wu Shuang suddenly roared when he noticed that Hua Zhu Yu hadn’t left .

  Advertis.e.m.e.nt

Hua Zhu Yu bowed in respect and turned to leave . As she stepped behind the screen, she heard Huangfu Wu Shuang instruct, “ Remember, if you hurt Wan Er again, zhen will not spare you so easily!”

Hua Zhu Yu’s lips curled into a faint wry smile and she replied, “This servant obeys your command! However, this servant hopes that Miss Wen is a magnanimous person and will not resent this servant . ” Once she spoke, she quickly left the room . Outside, it was incredibly cold .

Hua Zhu Yu strode forward, her pace becoming increasingly urgent until she couldn’t help but start running . Once the brightly lit palace was far behind her did she finally slow down .

She didn’t know why but her heart felt somewhat uncomfortable . Because of who exactly?

Before her eyes flashed the b.l.o.o.d.y scene on the execution grounds, then the gory killing on the battlefield, and the battles within this deep palace…… .

Her red eunuch attires quivered in the night wind and the cold air slid through her sleeves, pouring in, engulfing her body and heart .

She wasn’t aware of how long she was walking before she finally stopped . When she looked up, she had unknowingly arrived at Dan Hong’s Yong Tang Palace . She entered through the gates and walked up to the room . She gestured to the eunuch outside, indicating that he didn’t need to report before she pushed open the doors and walked in .

The smell of medicine enveloped the room . Sitting in front of the fire, Dan Hong was brewing the medicine . Upon seeing Hua Zhu Yu arrive, Dan Hong smiled and berated, “You haven’t come by these 2 days to take your medicine!”

Hua Zhu Yu took a seat leisurely and replied, “These past few days have been very busy, it can’t be helped . ”

Dan Hong shot her a chiding glare and said, “If you’re sick, you must take your medicine on time, otherwise how will you get better?”

Hua Zhu Yu felt apologetic as she sat there waiting while Dan Hong cooled the medicine . Once it was ready, she drank the medicine and the bitter taste flowed down her throat, making her frown . Dan Hong quickly handed her a candied date .

Hua Zhu Yu quickly placed it in her mouth and the sweet honey taste immediately suppressed the bitterness . She leaned back in her seat and smiled languidly . “Dan Hong, if I was a man, I’d definitely marry you as my wife . You are truly considerate!”

Dan Hong faintly smiled, a sliver of pain flashed in her eyes as she said,”Yes, if General was a man it would be great . Just…… I fear even if General really was a man, you still wouldn’t take Dan Hong as your wife . ”

Hua Zhu Yu’s expression turned stiff . She didn’t think Dan Hong had yet to let go of the entanglements in her heart . Sighing softly, she slowly walked over to Dan Hong and said, “Dan Hong, in the future I will definitely find a good marriage for you, a truly ideal husband . ”

“General…… . . ” Dan Hong’s eyes suddenly reddened and she lowered her head, no longer speaking .

Standing in the room watching the flickering of the faint candlelight, Hua Zhu Yu suddenly asked, “Dan Hong, that day how did you get your hands on Ji Feng Li’s secret report?”

Dan Hong furrowed her brows and said, “I snuck into the Retired Emperor Yan’s royal study and took it . ”

“Did it go smoothly?” Hua Zhu Yu questioned .

Dan Hong replied, “The study was guarded strictly but fortunately I wasn’t discovered . General, could it be that there’s a problem with the report?”

  Was there a problem?

Hua Zhu Yu walked over to the window and looked outside . In the quiet night sky the moon was obscured by layers of dark clouds, seemingly wishing to avoid the turmoils of the mundane world .

Though she wasn’t certain, she vaguely felt as though everything was not as it appears to be . She felt there was an obscuring fog overwhelming her, masking her vision, covering her heart…… . .

It was nearing New Year’s Eve . The Imperial Palace was filled with an auspicious and peaceful ambience . Lanterns and red-colored banners decorated the entire palace, exuding of festivities .

Leaving behind the festive scene, Hua Zhu Yu strolled alone along the edge of the frozen lake . It’s been 2 days since she has gone to wait on Huangfu Wu Shuang . He said he didn’t want to see her so she was enjoying her time off . The demon lord was in a fit of anger, if she went to serve him she’ll surely be punished for no reason . Moreover, she wasn’t in the mood to work these few days .

As she walked along, she noticed a faint light emanating from a lantern on the bridge in the distance . The light was gradually approaching, bringing into view a man dressed in golden dragon robes .

Unexpectedly, Huangfu Wu Shuang was also here . She wondered if she should avoid him, in any case, Huangfu Wu Shuang had said he didn’t want to see her .

Following this train of thought, she proceeded silently to a different path .

“Yuan Bao!” an angry voice sounded and Hua Zhu Yu had to halt her step .

“This servant did not see Your Majesty, hope Your Majesty forgives!” Hua Zhu Yu turned around and said as she knelt down .

“Did not see?” Huangfu Wu Shuang’s voice rung above her head, somewhat of suppressed anger .

Hua Zhu Yu was certain that this demon lord was indeed still angry .

  translations at peachblossomgrove . com

“This servant remembered Your Majesty did not want to see this servant so this servant wanted to step aside, fearing Your Majesty would get angry at the sight of this servant,” Hua Zhu Yu explained with her head lowered .

Huangfu Wu Shuang humphed in displeasure and his thin lips pursed as he brushed his sleeves stating, “You were probably excited zhen did not want to see you . ”

Hua Zhu Yu’s brows knitted in puzzlement . Truly a monarch’s mind was difficult to fathom . Serving a monarch was like serving a tiger . She did as he had ordered yet he still wasn’t satisfied . A cold chill suddenly ran down her back as she wondered if he actually wanted to make a move against her . Like the saying goes, once the birds are gone, it’s time to put away the bow(meaning=to discard a worthy person once he has served his purpose) . She helped him ascend the throne and now Ji Feng Li was about to topple, he could very well……

Just as the atmosphere was becoming tense, Huangfu Wu Shuang suddenly burst out laughing .

Hua Zhu Yu looked up in surprise and saw him grinning merrily, inciting her annoyance .

“Xiao Bao Er, on the battlefield are you really like a bloodthirsty wolf, truly that brave?” Huangfu Wu Shuang asked .

Hua Zhu Yu suddenly recalled that these were the words Wen Wan had used to describe her . She knitted her brows and slowly replied, “On the battlefield, if you’re not brave, you can be killed by the enemy at any time . ”

“That’s true . Xiao Bao Er, in fact zhen isn’t angry . Don’t know why but zhen can’t seem to be mad at you . But zhen had to let you be the bad guy for these two days . Without you serving me, zhen feels quite unaccustomed,” Huangfu Wu Shuang slowly said .

“Hmm,” Hua Zhu Yu sounded as she nodded her head .

Huangfu Wu Shuang suddenly gave an order to the other servants, “Everyone can withdraw . Zhen has matters to discuss with Xiao Bao Er . ”

When everyone else retreated a far distance away, Huangfu Wu Shuang walked closer to Hua Zhu Yu and said in a low voice, “Xiao Bao Er, zhen had long wanted to ask you something . ”

“What?” Xiao Bao Er asked, somewhat puzzled . Huangfu Wu Shuang was not one to hum and haw .

“Zhen had heard that the Left Chancellor treats you quite well . You shouldn’t have any other feelings for him right? Originally, zhen did not believe it but these days, seeing you not yourself, is it really due to Left Chancellor’s matters?” Huangfu Wu Shuang asked .

“No!” Hua Zhu Yu quickly replied without hesitation . “Your Majesty, who did you hear this from? It is merely a baseless rumor . Xiao Bao Er has a deep hatred for Ji Feng Li, how could I…… . moreover, though Xiao Bao Er is a eunuch, I’m still an upright man . There certainly must be people who can’t stand to see Your Majesty favor Xiao Bao Er and wants to sow discord . ”

Witnessing Hua Zhu Yu’s indignation, Huangfu Wu Shuang relaxed a bit and said, “Xiao Bao Er, zhen believes you so quickly stand . If it’s not true then tomorrow follow zhen to the prison cell . Having a little wolf like you along, zhen won’t be afraid! Lets go, back to the palace!”

Upon hearing this, Hua Zhu Yu’s expression stiffened then she faintly smiled and slowly caught up to Huangfu Wu Shuang as they went back .

  ***

Within the capital, the prison in the Ministry of Justice department was the most heavily guarded, it was easy to enter but difficult to leave .

Upon entering the prison, she noticed the eerie coldness in the air . Proceeding down the long pathway, there were a few burning oil lamps on the wall, the faint light swayed restlessly like a ghost . Although it was daytime, within the prison it was dark and dingy . Perhaps because Ji Feng Li was detained here, it seemed to be even more strictly guarded .

The head official of the prison apparently was not antic.i.p.ating that Huangfu Wu Shuang would pay a visit . Upon his arrival, the head official anxiously ordered the prison guards to light the torches every ten feet and at once the path was brightly lit .

Huangfu Wu Shuang coldly humphed and proceeded forward with his hands clasped behind his back while Hua Zhu Yu followed closely behind him .

The torches illuminated the walls made of cold stone . This place was indeed worst than a normal prison, even Nei Cheng Yuan could not compare . There was even a rancid odor within the prison, making one feel nauseous .

Finally, they stopped in front of a prison cell . Rely on the light of the torch, they looked through the bars and vaguely saw a person lying on the bed in the far corner .

“Open the doors!” Huangfu Wu Shuang ordered .

The prison guard reached for his keys and quickly went to open the heavy iron door . Huangfu Wu Shuang entered with Hua Zhu Yu behind him .

Once inside, they saw Ji Feng Li in his prison attires lying on the cold stone bed . On his body hung metal chains . Upon closer inspection, Hua Zhu Yu realized that the chains not only shackled his hands and feet but it also clamped on his shoulder blades and pinned against his shan zhong accupoint in front of his chest .

The shan zhong accupoint was vital for a martial artist because it was important for employing internal strength . Once it has been sealed, no matter how high the martial artist’s internal strength was, he could no longer use it, leaving him weak and defenseless . Moreover, to have someone damage this accupoint would result in serious injury . There was no need for other weapons .

  Publishedat 3rd of October 2019 07:06:29 PMChapter 121

The chains shackling him bore into his shoulder blades and pinned against his shan zhong acupoint, restraining his movements and sealing his internal strength altogether . No longer able to employ his martial skills, Ji Feng Li was no different from ruins .

To a martial artist, the loss of his martial skills was a matter that was even worse than death . Without deep hatred, very few people will resort to such vicious means .

Hua Zhu Yu did not expect Huangfu Wu Shuang to be so cruel and ruthless .

She still remembered that day when she first entered the palace and had played a game of chess with Huangfu Wu Shuang . She once said that you could see through a person by watching how he plays chess . She had said that each and every one of his moves were swift and decisive . His breadth of mind was deep and profound . If one day he becomes the Emperor, he will certainly be a great one . She had said those words a.s.suming that the moves he used were his . Unexpectedly, he had been using Ji Feng Li’s gameplay so she had actually been praising Ji Feng Li .

When he heard her praise, he indignantly picked up a chess piece and the match which was originally in a deadlock, had fallen into chaos and disorder as he sneered, “No matter how great your chess skills are, you cannot avoid my fatal strike!”

It was then that Hua Zhu Yu realized how much Huangfu Wu Shuang despised Ji Feng Li . Could this be that fatal strike he was referring to?

Resorting to such extremes, he must know Ji Feng Li was a skilled martial artist .

Hua Zhu Yu suddenly understood why Ji Feng Li had been hiding his martial skills all this time . Perhaps he had soon realize such a day would come . He probably wanted to leave a path of retreat for himself so that when he was detained he would still have an opportunity to escape .

It can be said that Ji Feng Li had carefully planned everything .

If he hadn’t saved her on the battlefield, he would not have revealed his martial skills and perhaps he would not have fallen to such a state . It could be said that his present situation, more or less had something to do with her .

As she came to this thought, Hua Zhu Yu did not know where to place her eyes . Ji Feng Li was in a very wretched state . His prison uniform was blotched with blood and the metal shackles binding his feet reflected off the rays of light, illuminating his face that was pale in complexion .

Like a fine needle, the light p.r.i.c.ked her eyes .

Quickly averting her gaze, Hua Zhu Yu turned towards the corner of the bed . In the silent prison cell, she could hear the sound of her own breathing as a strange feeling arose within . It was seemingly pain and despair taking root in her heart, slowly consuming her .

She tried to suppress those feelings and after some time, she finally dared to look back at him .

Beneath the dim light, Ji Feng Li was lying on his side, motionless on the bed . His long hair was unbound, scattering across his face, covering half of it .

“Ji Feng Li, His Majesty came to see you! Quickly get up and pay your respect!” the prison official coldly yelled, his bearing full of haughtiness . If this was before, he probably wouldn’t even dare to breathe too heavily when facing this Left Chancellor .

Ji Feng Li’s lashes trembled slightly before his eyelids rose, revealing a pair of lucid, beautiful eyes . Even in this state, he still had the power to captivate one’s attention .

He looked over and beneath the faint light, his beautiful face was exceedingly pale . As though he was enduring a lot of pain, his forehead was dotted with beads of sweat . However, his gaze was calm and steady as he faced Huangfu Wu Shuang, void of any inkling of fear as he smiled faintly .

“So it is Your Majesty that has arrived . I was just thinking that so many days had gone by yet no one dared to come and visit . Your Majesty, please forgive me for I cannot pay respect . ” With a slight movement of his arm, the chains binding him shook, colliding against one another and against his bones .

The striking clatters made Hua Zhu Yu feel as though her own shoulder was in pain but Ji Feng Li only slightly frowned . Beside the beads of sweat on his forehead, his lips was curved in a peerless smile, as thought flaunting that his flesh and bones were as tough as stone .

  Advertis.e.m.e.nt

“Oh? Bao gong gong also came,” Ji Feng Li remarked in a tone that was light as pa.s.sing wind .

With difficulty, Hua Zhu Yu faced Ji Feng Li and saw his smile, laced with ridicule and disdain . He seemed to have long guessed that she would come along with Huangfu Wu Shuang . He narrowed his eyes and asked with a smile, “ Now that I’m in such a state, I wonder if Bao gong gong is satisfied?”

This time there was only indifference and estrangement in his voice . It was no longer that gentle voice that called her Bao’Er .

His whole body gave off a cold and distant aura, invoking a sense of fear in one’s heart .

Hua Zhu Yu felt a tightness in her chest that made it hard for her to breathe . She clenched her fists and tried to show a calm smile as she said, “That’s right, to be able to see Left Chancellor in such a state, naturally I’m happy . ”

Her goal was finally achieved but why was she feeling this way . It was like there were thousands of ants nibbling at her heart .

Ji Feng Li suddenly threw his head back laughing . Hua Zhu Yu had never seen him laugh like that . His laughter was radiant like a flower blossoming in the night, charming and splendid .

Huangfu Wu Shuang grew annoyed and coldly asked, “Ji Feng Li, what are you laughing for?”

Ji Feng Li’s laughter slowly receded and he replied, “Nothing, merely laughing at myself . ”

Huangfu Wu Shuang’s eyes narrowed and he walked up to Ji Feng Li . “Xiao Bao’Er, it seems that the Left Chancellor has yet to pay respect, go over and a.s.sist him!”

Hua Zhu Yu was alarmed at the sudden order . She knew that Huangfu Wu Shuang would take advantage of this time to torture and humilate Ji Feng Li but she didn’t expect him to push the task onto her . Trying to suppress the turbulent emotions inside, she slowly stepped forward .

Ji Feng Li’s eyes condensed as he saw Hua Zhu Yu approaching . His sharp gaze was so cold that she felt a chill enveloping her whole body .

She walked up to him and with a wicked grin she grabbed his collar . Their eyes met at a distant close enough to see into each other’s soul .

Hua Zhu Yu looked at Ji Feng Li’s beautiful elegant face, his distinct brows, and deep phoenix eyes hidden beneath those long thick lashes . She was momentarily at a loss as she looked into his eyes which seemed to have the power to draw her in .

“Xiao Bao’Er…… . ” Huangfu Wu Shuang called in a cold voice .

Awakening from her daze, Hua Zhu Yu raised her voice and viciously said, “Ji Feng Li, you also have such a day? It’s truly refreshing!”

She violently pulled Ji Feng Li and he immediately fell off the bed .

The chains on his body and shook and pulled . Ji Feng Li had to endure the pain as he took in a sharp breath, cold sweat dotting his forehead . He laid on the ground look straight up at Hua Zhu Yu, unblinking .

“Good…… good . ……” he uttered as he stared at Hua Zhu Yu, his eyes calm as stagnant water .

Hua Zhu Yu welcomed Ji Feng Li’s gaze with a cruel smile playing on her lips .

Ji Feng Li’s chest violently heaved as blood spilled from the corners of his lips . His shirt was also stained with fresh blood from the wounds on his shoulder blade yet he remained calmly smiling .

Looking at him, Hua Zhu Yu went over to grab his collar and pull him up . But in that moment, the smell of fresh blood and the frenzy clattering of the chains made her feel uncomfortable . Ever since she started taking the medicine, it’s been a while since she felt nauseous . But no matter how hard she tried to suppress the urge, she couldn’t . She quickly ran out of the cell . With the support of the wall, she leaned over and gagged .

“Xiao Bao’Er, what’s wrong?” Huangfu Wu Shuang followed behind her and asked in a worried tone as he patted her back . His voice was exceedingly gentle, in the eyes of others it was truly affectionate .

Hua Zhu Yu rested one hand against the wall while the other stroked down her chest . “This prison is suffocating, moreover…… . there is also…… . the smell of blood……”

In the dark prison cell, Ji Feng Li remarked contemptuously, “What’s the matter, a person accustomed to seeing blood such as Bao gong gong is actually afraid of blood?”

“Your Majesty……this place is stifling…… . this servant wishes to step out for air,” Hua Zhu Yu said with her head lowered . Her complexion was pale as snow and the uncomfortable feeling in her chest hadn’t yet ceased . “Your Majesty, how about we return?”

Huangfu Wu Shuang narrowed his eyes and replied, “Alright, if Xiao Bao’Er feels uncomfortable then zhen will accompany you back . ”

Huangfu Wu Shuang turned to the guards and ordered, “Guard carefully, if anything happens, zhen will have your heads!” He then turned around and extended a hand to support Hua Zhu Yu .

  translations at peachblossomgrove . com

“Your Majesty, no need! This servant can walk on my own!” Hua Zhu Yu said as she avoided his helping hand .

“Even so zhen wants to help you!” Huangfu Wu Shuang stubbornly insisted childishly .

Hua Zhu Yu sighed and heard the prison cell door close with a thud, making her slightly tremble as she allowed Huangfu Wu Shuang support her out .

Lying on the ground, Ji Feng Li watched as Hua Zhu Yu and Huangfu Wu Shuang’s figures departed along the pathway until the iron doors finally closed and the smile on his lips slowly withdrew .

When they arrived at the prison, it was sunset . Now that they were leaving, it was already nighttime .

Huangfu Wu Shuang got onto the carriage and Hua Zhu Yu rode her horse beside it .

Huangfu Wu Shuang left the palace in disguise so their party was not too ostentatious . Though there weren’t many guards accompanying them, the few that did were all highly skilled . They surrounded the carriage in protection as it left the Ministry of Justice and entered the bustling main streets .

Since it was almost New Year’s Eve, the night market was crowded with people . Lights and the sound of music filled the air .

Hua Zhu Yu still remembered that day when Ji Feng Li returned in triumph and walked down this same street . The people had filled the streets to welcome him with glory . Yet a mere few days later he was imprisoned . At the height of heaven, he fell to h.e.l.l .

But the people of Yu City were unaware of the changing tides within the dark palace . Everyone was engrossed in the festivities of New Years .

Riding down the street, all she saw were smiling faces but Hua Zhu Yu didn’t know why she could only see that dark and dreary prison cell before her .

She began to feel confused and uncertain, thinking that she shouldn’t hate him . Hating him had not brought a single day of peace, instead it made her cold, unable to distinguish…… .

Just as their group was proceeding, a carriage headed in the opposite direction was pa.s.sing by . The moment the carriage pa.s.sed Hua Zhu Yu, the driver suddenly jumped over and charged at Hua Zhu Yu with his sword in hand .

The a.s.sa.s.sin was highly skilled and moments later the sword had quickly approached Hua Zhu Yu’s neck .

The guards tried to go help her but another a.s.sa.s.sin jumped out and pushed them back with his powerful internal strength .

The sword gleamed underneath the moonlight as Hua Zhu Yu quickly leaned back to dodge . As soon as moved out of the way, the sword came back swinging .

Seeing a fight breakout, the pedestrians quickly moved out of the way and the streets became chaotic . Hua Zhu Yu drew her sword to block the oncoming a.s.sault . The collision of the two swords reflected the light in all directions and Hua Zhu Yu cold see the opponent’s sword gleaming in an indigo radiance .

  There was poison!

The a.s.sa.s.sin’s sword was laced with poison, he clearly wanted to take her life .

Hua Zhu Yu looked up, straight into the eyes of the a.s.sa.s.sin whose faced was masked behind a black cloth .

  Tang Yu!

Indeed, it was Tang Yu .

A comrade she once fought alongside on the battlefield now wanted to take her life . Tang Yu’s poison was deady and it was hard to find an antidote . As she thought of this, Hua Zhu Yu felt a cold chill run down her spine . If she hadn’t avoid his attack in time, she feared she would’ve already lost her life .

She did not dare to act carelessly . She tightened her grip on her sword as she fought Tang Yu . Before long the two of them had exchanged countless moves .

Hua Zhu Yu continued to dodge while Tang Yu persistently attacked . He was immersed in a murderous air as if he wouldn’t give up until he took her life tonight .

“Hurry up, you guys want to die, quickly protect chief Bao!” Huangfu Wu Shuang alighted the carriage and shouted from within the circle of protection of his guards .

After receiving the order, a number of guards rushed over to encircle Tang Yu and temporarily block his advancing attacks .

Hua Zhu Yu urged her horse towards Huangfu Wu Shuang and said, “Your Majesty, let’s go!”

Those guards weren’t going to be able to stop Tang Yu for long so they must quickly leave .

Huangfu Wu Shuang nodded and jumped onto the horse behind her . Steering towards the direction of the palace, Hua Zhu Yu rode the horse with swift urgency, leaving the battle behind as the fighting outcries grew increasingly faint in contrast with the wind whisking by her ears . The streets lights quickly departed from view but her heart was becoming increasingly heavy…… .

The night was dark as ink .

After taking the medicine, Hua Zhu Yu left Dan Hong’s Yong Tang Palace and headed east towards the back gates . Tonight, she did not bring An Xiao’Er along but quietly left the palace on her own . After determining that no one was following her, she employed her internal strength and entered the small house .

Inside, the flickering candlelight projected the shadow of a figure upon the wall . Ping Lao Dao was currently reading and only the sound of pages being turned was heard within the peaceful room . Upon seeing movement, Ping Lao Dao suddenly raised his head and saw that it was Hua Zhu Yu who arrived . With a hint of surprise, he warmly welcomed her and said, “ The night is already so late, how come the General came in person? If there is something urgent, just let someone pa.s.s on the message . ”

Hua Zhu Yu stepped forward and asked, “Where is Kang?”

“Resting in the room,” Ping Lao Da answered as he placed the book down and went into the room to call for Kang Lao San .

Kang Lao San was deep in sleep so having been awakened suddenly, he was irritated . When he noticed that Hua Zhu Yu had arrived, his eyes brightened as he said, “General came?” As soon as the words left his mouth, he pouted and continued, “Unfortunately, Tai is not here so there’s not enough people to play ma diao . ”

Hua Zhu Yu coldly snorted . “At this time of life and death, you still want to play ma diao?”

Kang Lao San’s expression stiffened and he said, “Isn’t the Left Chancellor imprisoned?”

Ping Lao Da glanced at Kang and replied, “This is only the beginning . ”

Hua Zhu Yu nodded and proceeded to ask, “Ping, have you gathered the Orphan Army?”

  Ping Lao Da nodded .

“Today I have a task to give you . You cannot disclose this to anyone, including even An and Tai . Ping, as soon as possible, send someone to the eastern lands . Verify if Tai’s troops are truly from w.a.n.g Yi . Kang, you go to Liangzhou personally . That day I had buried the Marquis’ body in a desolate area outside of the city . Originally I was going to bring him back after our revenge was completed . Take a tri there for me and bring his remains back . Remember, the Marquis’ right arm is broken . Don’t make a mistake!”

The two of them were shocked but still nodded in a.s.sent . Kang Lao San hesitantly asked, “General, why are you doing this now?”

“There is something else as well . Ping, send people to secretly look for the Left Chancellor’s wife . Remember, once there is news of her, immediately report back to me,” Hua Zhu Yu sternly ordered .

Ping and Kang suddenly felt that the young general who once commanded the army of thousands of men had returned .

“General, why employ the Orphan Army? Why not let An quietly take the the Yulin Army to investigate . That way the presence of the Orphan Army won’t be revealed . ” Kang Lao San asked .

Hua Zhu Yu shook her head . “Although it would be more convenient to use the Yulin Army, our target is too large, moreover…… . ”

Having heard her orders, Ping Lao Dao’s brows furrowed and he said, “General you’re suspicious that things are not as we have investigated but…… . ”

Hua Zhu Yu nodded . “Ping, meanwhile I will quietly instill a few men of the Orphan Army into the palace . I also want to bribe a few officials to handle matters in court . Remember, in the future, beside An’s people reporting to you, I will also send members of the Orphan Army .

The two men nodded in unison and Hua Zhu Yu entrusted them with a few more things . Seeing that it was getting very late, she quietly returned to the palace .
