Chapter 9 – Even a randomly selected pair of strangers would have a closer relationship than this ma

“I remember! Dad had me remember his phone number and mom’s number. If I ever get lost, I can call you or dad!”

There was even a phone watch on his chubby wrist. Without Ruan Xia telling him the number, he had already called his dad.

Children were so smart these days. Although he didn’t even recognize a single word, he knew how to use the phone watch to call someone. Ruan Xia guessed that there were probably only a few numbers saved on his phone watch, so there was only a slight difference in navigation to the different numbers.

The chubby kid seemed quite familiar with doing this. He probably called his dad often.

The call was quickly answered. In a very gentle tone, Mr. Song asked, “Little Wang, is there something wrong? Why are you calling dad?”

If a child grew up in a household where parents didn’t love and care for him, then the child was very pitiful. Ruan Xia couldn’t help feeling moved that at least Mr. Song was a dependable father. Otherwise, it would be hard to say if this the chubby kid would have a lively personality right now.

Actually, if Mr. Song hadn’t prematurely died, even if the original Ruan Xia was still here, Song Shuyan could have still had a happy childhood.

This child in the novel was very pitiful. At the age of three, he had lost his father that loved him. And then, it didn’t take long for his mother to abandon him by giving him away.

Even Ruan Xia was starting to feel sympathetic towards him.

The kid looked at Ruan Xia, then he loudly answered, “Dad, I miss you!”

This was followed by low-pitched laughter from the other end.

As a single woman, Ruan Xia felt as if even her ears could get pregnant from hearing that sound.

“Dad misses you too. Dad will be back in a few days. I bought lots of toys for you.”

Ruan Xia was sure that Mr. Song had given a lifetime’s worth of patience and gentleness to his son.

Anyways, this man, who had died at the beginning of the novel, was a good father.

“You don’t have to wait,” the little kid happily said, “Mom said she’ll bring me to see you tomorrow!”

“Oh?” It sounded as if he had stopped smiling. After a pause, he asked, “Mom is going to bring you to see me?”

  “Yup!”

  “Mom said that?”

  “Yup!”

Hearing his tone, Ruan Xia was sure that Mr. Song was feeling baffled right now.

She had originally assumed that Mr. Song would want to speak to her to figure out what was going on. And so, she had a speech planned and revised it several times to make sure there were no holes in her argument.

To her surprise, Mr. Song merely said, “Okay, dad gets it. Dad will be waiting to see you and mom tomorrow.”

  Ruan Xia: “.……”

Even though he didn’t know what was going on, it didn’t even occur to him talk to his wife on the phone. She was wrong. Even a randomly selected pair of strangers would have a closer relationship than this married couple.

He didn’t want to talk to her, and she didn’t want to join their phone conversation either. This was great. If the original Ruan Xia and Mr. Song actually had any sort of feelings for each other or had a good relationship, she wouldn’t know what to do.

After all, although she was Ruan Xia right now, she didn’t see Mr. Song as her husband. She didn’t have the mental toughness to accept a stranger as her husband.

She felt a similar feeling towards the chubby kid in front of her. Even though he was very cute in appearance and personality and was at a child’s most lovable and innocent age, Ruan Xia couldn’t see him as her son.

En, she could just be his quirky aunt. She couldn’t play a substitute role and treat herself as someone else’s wife or mother.

Translator Ramblings: I like that she doesn’t immediately fall in love with the idea of being Little Wang’s mother, but is still willing to be responsible for him. I find her more relatable. I think it would be hard for most people to instantly accept someone else’s child as his or her own or be up for the heavy responsibility of being a parent.

What do you guys think of Ruan Xia?

Chapter 10 – It wasn’t because Mr. Song felt possessive of his wife and wanted to monopolize her. It was simply because the married couple had a bad relationship. He didn’t want to talk about her or think about her. (1)

Although Little Song Shuyan had his own room, he didn’t sleep in it. If Mr. Song was home, he would sleep with his father. If his dad wasn’t home, the kid would sleep with the nanny. In short, he never slept together with his mom or by himself.

From this, Ruan Xia could draw the conclusion that other than the first night when Song Shuyan was conceived, Mr. Song and the novel’s Ruan Xia always slept in separate rooms, even after they were married. Ruan Xia speculated that the novel’s Ruan Xia must have exerted a lot of effort that night to get pregnant……

Back to the original point, based on the novel’s Ruan Xia’s memory, Mr. Song knew that she trapped him. So of course, he wouldn’t have a favorable impression of her. However, back then, the novel’s Ruan Xia had insisted on carrying the baby to term and giving birth. She demanded that he marry her, but she also said that they could continue to live separate lives. She didn’t care what he wanted to do in his free time. Anyways, the novel’s Ruan Xia had never wanted Mr. Song’s love. She just wanted to have an easy life where everything was provided for her.

Mr. Song probably found her baffling. Although he wasn’t willing to accept this type of marriage, he didn’t want his child to be born out of wedlock. And so, his only choice was to agree. They couldn’t be considered partners in life. At most, they were roommates.

However, these two had managed to live together in harmony with everyone minding their own business for the past four years.

They never quarreled because there normally wasn’t even a chance for them to see each other and talk. The novel’s Ruan Xia wanted money and a lavish lifestyle. As for Mr. Song, he hadn’t been willing to accept this marriage from the start. He didn’t like the novel’s Ruan Xia and was happy to keep their contact at a minimum.

Actually, as long as both parties were willing, this type of marriage wasn’t that unacceptable.

“I want to sleep with mom tonight.” The young child tried to look as cute as possible. He was determined to stay here and not leave.

Truly, this young child was the type to “want a mile if you give him an inch”. Since his mother had treated him well today – she hugged him and kissed him, his long-term memory went out the window like a goldfish’s memory. He forgot how she had ignored him until today.

Ruan Xia was somewhat hesitant. She had started sleeping by herself since she was young. Even when she went on vacation with her friends, she would make sure to reserve enough rooms and beds so everyone had a bed to herself.

Song Shuyan saw Ruan Xia’s hesitation. He lied down on the bed, shut his eyes, and loudly declared, “I’m already asleep. Mom, don’t wake me up.”

  He was determined!

As a normal adult, although there were times when Ruan Xia found kids annoying, most of the time she would still continue to be patient with them nonetheless. Thinking of how pitiful this child was, her heart softened. She was extra patient with him. She pulled up the blanket to cover him. “Alright, go to sleep.”

Ruan Xia thought; playing with a young child could be counted as physical labor.

One moment, he would pull her over to play with wooden jigsaw blocks. The next moment, he wanted to play hide-and-seek, and on. After only one day, Ruan Xia was exhausted. She felt like an old dog.

This child really had exuberant energy. After lying down on the bed, the novel’s Ruan Xia drifted into a dream.

Once again, she dreamed about the novel’s Ruan Xia.

Looking haughty and indifferent, the novel’s Ruan Xia said to her, “I’m giving that man to you. That child also. Don’t think about going back to your world. Even if you go back, I’m not coming back here.”

Flabbergasted, Ruan Xia said, “They’re not my husband and child. Why should I take the family you’re abandoning?”

  How ridiculously presumptuous!

Chapter 11 – It wasn’t because Mr. Song felt possessive of his wife and wanted to monopolize her. It was simply because the married couple had a bad relationship. He didn’t want to talk about her or think about her. (2)

When Ruan Xia woke up the next morning, she didn’t know if that was just a dream or if she had really talked with the novel’s Ruan Xia.

On a gut level, she felt that it had been a real conversation.

Ruan Xia really wanted to curse.

Please don’t let her meet that woman in her dreams again. If she met her again, she was sure to be angered to death by her. What kind of person was she?!

Look, it was no big deal if she wanted to abandon her husband. They were both adults. But, she didn’t even want her own child. She hadn’t seen reluctant at all either. Really, this woman was on another level from normal humans.

Ruan Xia thought of what the novel’s Ruan Xia had done later in the story and suddenly felt relieved.

Yesterday, Ruan Xia had booked tickets for noon. If there was no traffic, it would take almost 40 minutes to get to the airport from the Song family’s home. Ruan Xia saw that there was still time before they had to leave, and she checked that the flight’s departure time hadn’t been delayed on her phone. After the aunty, who served as a housekeeper and nanny, cooked breakfast, Ruan Xia said she could take time off while they were gone. She would be paid her normal wage during the vacation.

The aunty beamed with pleasure when she heard. She enjoyed working here. The husband and wife were generous employers, and they weren’t troublesome at all.

A sumptuous breakfast had been prepared. There were hard boiled eggs, corn and meat congee as well as steamed soup dumplings.

The chubby kid peeled a hard boiled egg. Once he was done, he placed the egg on Ruan Xia’s plate. He looked at her with bright eyes. “Mom, you can eat the egg white, I’ll eat the yolk.”

Honestly, this kid was really sweet and tugged at her heartstrings.

Even at this age, she could tell that he would grow up to be handsome. It wasn’t surprising that the female lead would fall in love with him at the earlier part of the novel and have a hard time leaving him.

He was an obedient child that was well-behaved even during meals. He didn’t need anyone to feed him, and he ate plenty of food. His chubby body was a fair consequence.

After they finished breakfast, Ruan Xia took the chubby kid along with a rolling suitcase to the airport.

  —

She hadn’t put extra effort in dressing up today. But, many heads at the airport still turned to look at them. Their gazes were drawn by the combination of the novel’s Ruan Xia’s goddess level beauty and an adorable, chubby kid.

The chubby kid was especially excited today. He looked left and right. He was going on a plane today!

“Are we really going up into the sky?” He asked.

Ruan Xia laughed. “Yup, we’re all going to up into the sky.

“Then, can I roll around in the clouds?”

“You can’t.” Ruan Xia solemnly lied, “You’re too heavy. If you were lighter, you would be able to.”

  “Oh.”

They were in the waiting area. A man, who was wearing sunglasses and sitting next to them, laughed from hearing their exchange. It was a dull sound.

Ruan Xia turned her head, and their eyes happened to meet.

“Your younger brother is very cute,” said the young man. Ruan Xia was only twenty-five years old. She was so youthful and beautiful. No one would guess that Song Shuyan was her son, so it wasn’t surprising that the young man would make the wrong assumption.

Ruan Xia felt somewhat doubtful. Sometimes, a guy could pull off being a handsome guy by wearing sunglasses.

Don’t be fooled though. If he took off his sunglasses, he might not……

Before she said anything in response, the chubby kid seriously said, “I’m not her brother. I’m her precious son.”

  The young man: “.……”

The chubby kid added, “Uncle, mom and I are going to see dad. I have a dad.”

Ruan Xia covered the the chubby kid’s mouth with her hand. She elegantly smile at the young man. “Children don’t know what they’re saying. Don’t take offense.”

The chubby kid humphed a few times, but he didn’t wiggle out of her grasp.

After the young man left, the chubby kid said, “Mom, you can’t not want me. You can’t not want dad either.”

Ruan Xia shot him a look. “You know a lot for your age.”

The young man might not have been trying to flirt with her, but Song Shuyan had a strong territorial awareness.

Chapter 12 – It wasn’t because Mr. Song felt possessive of his wife and wanted to monopolize her. It was simply because the married couple had a bad relationship. He didn’t want to talk about her or think about her. (3)

When they boarded the plane, they sat down in the first class seats that Ruan Xia had booked. There was no harm in spending extravagantly. Anyways, the novel’s Ruan Xia was wealthy. Wait, no, the novel’s Ruan Xia’s husband was the wealthy one.

Obviously, sitting in a plane seat wasn’t that interesting. Young Song Shuyan felt quite disappointed.

He had thought he would be able to exit the plane once it took off and go out into the sky. Or, at the very least, open the window and touch the clouds!

  —

After Song Tingshen finished discussing the last details for a joint project at work, he got into a car and checked the flight number that Ruan Xia had sent him. After checking online that the flight would arrive on time, he said to his assistant, who was driving the car, “Assistant Chen, call the hotel’s reception later and book another room, preferably a room that’s next to mine.”

Assistant Chen froze in surprise for a moment. But, as an assistant, it wasn’t his place to enquire about his boss’s private affairs.

“Let’s go to the airport.” Song Tingshen looked out the window. In a flat voice that made it impossible for anyone to guess what he was feeling, he said, “My son is coming here.”

Assistant Chen had been working as Song Tingshen’s personal assistant for a few years, so he had naturally seen his boss’s so before. He was a cute and lively kid that was easy to like. Every time Song Tingshen brought his son to the office, the female secretaries would be won over by his cute personality. It seemed as if they were one step away from working together to steal him away.

  But, wasn’t his boss’s son only three-years-old?

He definitely couldn’t have come here by himself. Then, who was the person that brought him here?

For a moment, a giant hole opened up in Assistant Chen’s brain. He knew that CEO Song didn’t have any close relatives.

It couldn’t be the rumored Mrs. Song, right?

Actually, he had seen Mrs. Song a few times. But, every time, she was either far away or wearing sunglasses. However, there were plenty of rumors about her going around the company.

It was rumored that four years ago, when she was still in college, she had a part-time job at the company. During that time, she captured the attention of all the men in the company. She was exceptionally beautiful. Beautiful enough to leave you feeling stunned and mesmerized. However, she had only been in the company for a short period of time, then she left because summer break ended. A short period later, she married Mr. Song and gave birth to a son.

Some people had speculated that Ruan Xia had married their boss before she had even started working at the company’s receptionist desk. It was like a grand empress going incognito to check on her husband.

There were also people that said Ruan Xia had used devious means to get pregnant and used her pregnancy to marry Mr. Song。

There were different opinions, but there was one thing that was certain. These two people were definitely married.

Strangely, Mrs. Song never appeared at the company again. During the company’s annual meetings or celebratory dinners, their boss’s wife never made an appearance. Some people said that it was because Mrs. Song was too beautiful, and Mr. Song was very possessive of his wife, so he hid her away at home……

Assistant Chen was sure that this assumption was wrong.

He had become Mr. Song’s assistant after his boss had gotten married. During the past few years, Mr. Song and his wife rarely appeared together. Also, he rarely mentioned his wife. Based on his man’s intuition, Assistant Chen felt it wasn’t because Mr. Song felt possessive of his wife and wanted to monopolize her. It was simply because the married couple had a bad relationship. He didn’t want to talk about her or think about her.

For example, it was very likely that it was Mrs. Song bringing their son to City A. However, his boss only mentioned that his son was coming. This clearly showed that this husband and wife…… had a significantly worse than average marital relationship.
